About Capacitance Units
Capacitance is measured in farads (F) and describes how much charge a capacitor stores per volt.
A farad is a very large unit, so practical capacitors are almost always quoted in microfarads, nanofarads, or picofarads. Decoupling caps are typically 100 nF, bulk caps a few hundred µF, and RF tuning caps single-digit pF — three orders of magnitude apart per prefix.
Example conversions
- 100 nF = 0.1 µF — a standard decoupling capacitor.
- 470 µF = 470,000 nF — a bulk power-supply capacitor.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert microfarads to nanofarads?
Multiply by 1000. 0.1 µF is 100 nF.
How do I convert nanofarads to picofarads?
Multiply by 1000. 4.7 nF is 4700 pF.
How do I convert microfarads to farads?
Divide by 1,000,000. 470 µF is 0.00047 F.
