Formula
Vpp = 2 × Vpeak
Description
The peak-to-peak voltage of a symmetric waveform is twice its peak amplitude, measuring the full swing from the most negative to the most positive value. Oscilloscopes display peak-to-peak directly, so this conversion links scope readings to the amplitude used in equations. For a sine, the RMS value is Vpp/(2√2).
Variables
- Vpp — Peak-to-peak voltage (V)
- Vpeak — Peak amplitude from zero (V)
Practical Notes
For a sine wave Vrms = Vpp / (2√2) ≈ 0.354·Vpp. Peak-to-peak is the easiest amplitude to read on a scope but must be converted to RMS for power calculations.
